PICTURE DISC INFORMATION

We have been collecting picture discs for over 20 years and have built up an extensive collection. Four years ago we opened a shop, The Picture Disc Gallery based in Derbyshire to display and sell picture disc’s as a collectable item worthy of display, over the years we have built up a strong customer base and through this connection we also have built up a number of contacts who have spent many years collecting autographs, as well as a reliable network of autograph chasers. We also have a number of reliable autograph dealers who, like ourselves are members of the UACC (Universal Autograph Collectors Club)

For the picture discs we developed our own unique framing system which allows you to view and display both sides of the record this particular frame has become very popular with our customers, some of which have quite large displays in their homes. Some of our customers like to collect a particular artist i.e.: Beatles, “David Bowie”, Hendrix etc and others might like to collect items relating to a movie star such as Marilyn Monroe who’s songs and images appear on more than 20 different picture disc’s. Quite a few of our customers prefer to collect individual pieces because of the rarity some of the picture disc’s produced only came out in very low numbers quite a few below the 100 mark.

During the last few months we have also introduced a single sided picture disc display frame that allows you to play your disc as well as display it, you can quite easily remove the record to play it, as there are many interview disc’s that were not issued on any other format, this frame gives you the opportunity to listen to the interview and then place the disc back in the frame to display it. Some of the artists that have recorded interview picture discs are as follows, Madonna, U2, Elvis, Queen, and many more.

History of the picture disc

Through 1970s, production became more of a promotional process. They were primarily used by the record labels to “hype” the music of various artists or groups, and eventually distributed to radio stations and record stores as incentives or gifts. Promotional copies were generally pressed in extremely small quantities, and sometimes as little as 100 copies of a disc were released to a worldwide market. Because of their limited nature and unique appearances, "promos" are highly sought after by collectors and fans alike.

In the late 1970s, a push by several recording companies including Capitol, Epic, and Columbia Records, was made to bring picture discs onto the commercial market in vast numbers. Groups such as “The Beatles”, “Pink Floyd”, “Meat Loaf” and “Rolling Stones” soon found their way to the shelves of the domestic and European markets.

As the 1980s came about, commercial production of picture discs was in full swing, although production eventually switched from domestic presses to the British and European plants. During the 80s and 90s artists such as Madonna , Kylie, “Black Sabbath”, ”Deep Purple”, and many more artist produced limited edition picture disc’s also referred to as “pic disc” or “picture disk” these are now sought after by fans all around the world. Below you will find information about artists that have at some time released a picture disc, if any are of interest to you please contact us for more details of availability.
